Born in 1948 as Hema Malini Chakravarthy in Jeeyapuram, Tiruchirappalli district, in the Madras Presidency, India, to a film producer mother, she had an early introduction to the movie industry. Her initial aspiration was to become a dancer, but while she was in class twelve, she decided to try out acting and landed her first role as a dancer in her debut movie Venniradai, but she was ultimately rejected by the director C.V. Sridhar as she was deemed too skinny at the time.
Nevertheless, she persevered and went on to become a bonafide superstar in the Indian movie industry with her major breakthrough roles in the movies Sapno Ka Saudagar and later on in Seeta Aur Geeta and Sholay. At the age of 74, she is still regarded as one of the most prominent figures in Indian entertainment, proudly earning the nickname “Dream Girl.”
